A Bigger Story

These three-and-a-half weeks home have been a joy. I am back to the weight I was before the three weeks in the hospital in March. 
I have been able to eat foods that are pureed or can be chewed to that consistency. This is a joy after being on an obligatory fast for most of the hospital stay. 
The tumor had not appeared to have grown through late March, for which I am thankful. 
I was advised to start radiation and low-dose chemo. These are scheduled to begin on May 10. 
I went in for the scanning and measuring for radiation this past Monday. The lengthy procedure on a hard CT scanning table was not very comfortable. However, afterwards one of the medical staff said my attitude during the process was very inspiring and encouraging. That reminded me that this adventure is not just about what I want or my comfort. It is part of a much larger story that God is writing. It is an honor to be part of that story. In this and in all our stories woven into the Great Story, may God be glorified.
I appreciate your prayers for the days and weeks to come. Please do join me in thanking God for the healing and restoration he has granted and for the continued healing he will accomplish. Please pray that any radiation or chemo would be effective and without side effects.
I appreciate prayer for my family too in this eventful time.

The Miraculous among the Mundane

Dear friends, Psalm 23 has taken renewed meaning for me these days. It is a great joy to be out in the country--"he makes me lie down in green pastures." In the face of pessimistic predictions, I am doing well. My cheeks, once so hollow and gaunt, are slowly filling back in. I find reason to sing: "he restores my soul." Yet the battle does seem to last much longer than I wanted it to. I wanted a speedy, instant miracle of full recovery. This is one taking lots of prayer and patience. In the ER again February 8, 2021

 Dear friends, Greetings from the emergency room at Hershey Medical Center. I am back here for my third time in just over two months. It has been just about one week since I came off the antibiotics and antifungals for sepsis. I came down with a fever yesterday and was advised to come into the ER.  It has been the most pleasant ER stay of the three. I was given a remote room in a far corner, which has the benefit of being much quieter! I was able to get more sleep last night than on any previous ER visit.  We are still waiting for a diagnosis on the fever. I am back on IV antibiotics as a precautionary measure. Apparently it can take 48 hours to get lab results back on blood cultures. Other lab results seem pretty good.
